The Benefits of Swimming

Swimming is one of the best full body excesses you can possibly do. It builds your stamina, tones a number of different muscles groups and relaxes your mind. Swimming is an aerobic exercise and therefore an excellent way to lose weight and improve your cardiovascular fitness. Swimming also provides additional health benefits by maintaining blood pressure and improving your lung capacity. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of strokes and lower cholesterol.

Many doctors and surgeons strongly recommend swimming as the ideal post-surgery exercise. Swimming is a low impact activity that allows you to exercise fully while recovering from injury or surgery without putting your body at further risk. Those patients who are suffering from heart problems can benefit a great deal from swimming. It has been shown to strengthen the heart muscles and allow the patients to steadily build up their cardiovascular capacity without having to engage in more strenuous exercises that could put their health at risk. Those who are already incredibly active individuals and take part in a wide range of sporting activities could also reap the cross training benefits provided by swimming.

The more competitive among you will enjoy the challenges swimming provides. Not only is it a physically challenging exercise but it̢۪ll test your mental strengths too. As a competitive sport, interest has grown steadily over the years and with the recent success that Britain has had at international level the trend sets to continue, especially with the Olympic games coming to London in 2012.

The swimming pool is the perfect place to teach children to swim in a safe and professionally supervised environment. Swimming is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and something that many people take for granted. However, if you're unable to swim you're likely to miss out in later life so it's something that's advisable to teach your children early on. Becoming a confident swimming can of course save your life or the lives of others. Hopefully, no one of us will ever find ourselves in a situation where we will need to jump into the water to save somebody else but being able to swim could one day make all the difference.

Despite the overwhelming health and fitness benefits that swimming offers there is no getting away from the fact that a visit to the swimming pool is guaranteed to provide some serious fun. Many swimming pools have a range of diving boards, waterslides and other activities to take the edge off the more serious side of swimming and provide hours of fun.
